When David was unfairly treated by King Saul, we have seen how he didn’t complain about Saul but went to God for justice. The next thing David did was to check with God to see if he had done something wrong. Ps.26: 2 Put me on trial, Lord, and cross-examine me. Test my motives and my heart.[1] I think David knew that it was possible that he was part of the problem. There are times that we all have blind spots in our life that only God can reveal.
This wasn’t the only time that David checked to see if he was in the wrong. Ps. 139: 23 God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares. 24 See if there is any path of pain I’m walking on,
and lead me back to your glorious, everlasting ways—the path that brings me back to you.[2]
David was willing to submit his will to God’s will. He knew that as a sinful human, he might not even realize his sinful actions. We are much the same today. It is always a good idea to check to see if we might be part of the problem. Our actions can have unintended consequences and it is best to sort this out at the beginning of a disagreement. We may be complaining about how the situation is unfair but may have contributed to the problem. It might be that as we correct our actions, the problem will lessen.
