The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Gideon and Purah crept up on the enemy just as a man was telling his companion about a dream. ‘In my dream a loaf of barley bread came tumbling down into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent, turned it over, and knocked it flat!’ His companion answered, ‘Your dream can only mean God has given Gideon victory over us.’ Gideon bowed and worshipped God then returned to his camp. – Slide 6

Everyone dreams although most of the time we don’t remember our dreams. Scripture tells us that both believers and unbelievers can receive dreams from the Lord.

  • Genesis 37:7-8 – Joseph had dreamed his brothers would bow down to him and many years later that dream came true
  • Genesis 41 – Pharaoh received a dream and Joseph interpreted it.
  • Daniel 2 – King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream and Daniel gave its meaning
  • Matthew 1:20 – An angel came to Joseph in a dream telling him to take Mary as his wife.

These all were dreams from the Lord and gave insight and understanding.

The Lord gave a Midianite Soldier a Dream

God had given Gideon a daunting battle plan. He was to take only 300 men in battle against thousands and God would give him the victory. Gideon was fearful to follow God’s bold plan. To reassure Gideon, God instructed him to go down to the Midian camp. Gideon had no idea that God would give the enemy a dream about his upcoming victory. Only God could orchestrate such a plan.

Judges 7: 13 Gideon crept up just as a man was telling his companion about a dream. The man said, “I had this dream, and in my dream a loaf of barley bread came tumbling down into the Midianite camp. It hit a tent, turned it over, and knocked it flat!” 14 His companion answered, “Your dream can mean only one thing—God has given Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite, victory over Midian and all its allies!” [1]

God can give anyone a dream if it suits His purposes. The Midianite solider had no idea that his dream would give his enemy the strength to win the battle. Through this dream Gideon learned to depend on God and God would receive the glory for the victory. For it was only through the power of God that the battle was won.

God Continues to Give Significant Dreams to People

Scripture tells us that the New Testament era will be a special time of giving people dreams. Acts 2:17‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.[2]

I believe God desires to speak through dreams to give encouragement and insight. Perhaps you’ve never received a dream from God, or at least didn’t realize a dream was from the Lord. Here is a process that has been helpful for me:

  • Expect the Lord in faith to answer your prayer.
  • When you wake up ask the Lord to help you remember a dream that is from Him.
  • Keep a dream journal and write it down.
  • Pray again and ask the Lord for meaning.

Remember any dream must match up with God’s word. If a dream contradicts God’s written Word or encourages you to take an action that is outside the character and nature of Jesus, it is not from God.

Be blessed as the Lord speaks to you through dreams. To hear more about dreams from the Lord, listen here: https://podpoint.com/light-of-christ-church-podcast/faith-makes-a-difference-gideon
