There are times in life when our problems or situation seems to overwhelm us. A loss of a job, a health crisis, death of a child, loss of a spouse, changing society, an addiction are problems that seem crushing. How can trusting the Lord when our problems seem overwhelming help us?
The Israelites were Overwhelmed with the Spies Report
The Israelites observed the hand of God as He led them out of Egypt. The Lord brought miraculous plagues upon the Egyptians until they let God’s people go. God had supernaturally provided for them for forty years in the desert. The spies said the land was filled with milk and honey, but also had something they did not expect. It overwhelmed them.
Numbers 13:28 But the people living there are powerful, and their towns are large and fortified. We even saw giants there, the descendants of Anak! 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev, and the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the hill country. The Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan Valley.”[1]
Trusting the Lord Helps me Overcome the Giants of my Life
As the story unfolds, ten out of the twelve spies trusted only in themselves. Their lack of trust would have terribly negative consequences, but it did not have to be that way. Along the journey of life, we often find ourselves in a place where there are figurative giants. If we rely on ourselves, we can easily be defeated, but God has a different plan.
Solomon writes of about three strands that are not easily broken. The Lord often acts as the third strand. Ecclesiastes 4:12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. [2]
The next time you are faced with a giant in life talk to God about it. Ask the Lord for wisdom and discernment for what to do. You will be amazed how the Lord will help you. Why? Because He loves you and wants you to look up to and depend on Him. Trusting the Lord when our problems seem overwhelming is the best way to get through life.
James 1:5 is great assurance when we need the Lord’s help. If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. [3]
