Many people today have taken advantage of DNA testing to gain information from generation to generation. DNA data bases tell statistically what countries your ancestors came from. Some people have been surprised how some information had gotten lost in the past generations.
Unleavened Bread to be Kept from Generation to Generation
Exodus 12: 14b Each year, from generation to generation, you must celebrate it as a special festival to the Lord. This is a law for all time. 15 For seven days the bread you eat must be made without yeast… 17 “Celebrate this Festival of Unleavened Bread, for it will remind you that I brought your forces out of the land of Egypt on this very day. This festival will be a permanent law for you; celebrate this day from generation to generation.[1]
Here God gives Moses instructions for the Feast of Unleavened bread. Any time God repeats Himself it shows the importance of the message. Here within three verses God commands His people to keep this celebration from generation to generation. This is something that must be handed down from grandmother to grandson and so on.
1400 Years Later, Unleavened Bread is Still Being Celebrated
Matthew 26: 17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do you want us to prepare the Passover meal for you?”[2] Here we can see how Passover, a one-day celebration, and Feast of Unleavened Bread, a seven-day celebration, had morphed into a single celebration of eight days that could go by either the name Passover or the Festival of Unleavened bread.
We can see that it is important to Jesus that He celebrate this with His disciples. Luke 22: 14 When the time came, Jesus and the apostles sat down together at the table. 15 Jesus said, “I have been very eager to eat this Passover meal with you before my suffering begins. 16 For I tell you now that I won’t eat this meal again until its meaning is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God.”[3]
A New Celebration to Pass Onto the Generations
The disciples had celebrated Passover/Unleavened Bread all their lives, but this time Jesus puts a new twist on the celebration. Matthew 26: 26 As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.”
27 And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, “Each of you drink from it, 28 for this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. 29 Mark my words—I will not drink wine again until the day I drink it new with you in my Father’s Kingdom.”[4]
Here Jesus intends to fulfill the meaning of this celebration with what He will do on the cross. The forgiveness of sins that His sacrifice on the cross will bring will renew the covenant between God and His people.
