Being spiritually blind is a dangerous condition. It is caused by hard hearts by those who refuse to believe in Jesus Christ and His Word. Scripture tells us the Lord wants all people to come to salvation. This is His earnest desire for each person, no matter how far they have drifted away, yet some refuse to come to the Lord.
Paul gives us a severe warning. Romans 2:8 But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness.[1] Paul tells us that satan plays a role in people’s spiritual blindness. 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God. [2]
Without God’s grace and left to our own means, we are easily entangled in the enemy’s schemes. We can become so involved in the affairs of this world and its darkness that the Lord turns us over to spiritual blindness and its consequences.
Blinded to the Message
During Jesus’ last week of ministry, He taught several parables, including the parable of the Great Feast. Matthew 22: 4 “So he sent other servants to tell them, ‘The feast has been prepared. The bulls and fattened cattle have been killed, and everything is ready. Come to the banquet!’ 5 But the guests he had invited ignored them and went their own way, one to his farm, another to his business. 6 Others seized his messengers and insulted them and killed them.[3]
Jesus knew the history of Israel. God had repeatedly called them back to faith, but they refused. Their priorities were in the wrong place. They were more concerned about things of this world than God’s invitation. In fact, they had been downright wicked. They had killed God’s messengers, the prophets. Now, Jesus is giving them, yet again, another message. In just a few days, this Jewish leadership will have Him killed. They are blind to the Son of God in front of them.
The Holy Spirit Reveals God’s Message
You may not know if you are spiritually blind or your heart is hard, but the Holy Spirit does. When we respond to the Holy Spirit, it is God trying to get through to us to turn to Him. As we begin to listen and turn to the Lord, the voice of the Holy Spirit becomes clearer. As we humble ourselves and confess our sins to the Lord, He forgives us. In this process, our hearts can soften as the Lord transforms us.
