God’s Timing

We don’t always understand God’s timing, but we must trust He knows best. We may only see God’s timing in retrospect. When we are in the middle of struggles, His timing may be confusing. The older I become, the more I can look back at God’s timing, which helps me with His timing moving forward.

Jesus was at a wedding in Cana with His mother and disciples when His mother came to Him with a need. John 2:The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” [1]

Jesus came to this earth in God’s timing to die for the sins of the world. Throughout Jesus’s ministry, He would look to the Father as He ministered, including His timing. John 5:19 So Jesus explained, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.[2] When Mary told Jesus about the wine problem, Jesus’ reply let her know it would have to be at the right time.

We Need to Accept God’s Timing

Mary did not question Jesus when He told her his time had not yet come but trusted her Son. John 2:But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” [3] Mary did not know what Jesus would do but trusted Him to do what was best. Sometimes, we encounter situations we don’t understand and must trust the Lord to work it out for the best.

Absolute trust in the Lord focuses on Him, not how He will work everything out. With child-like faith, we know God will help, but we do not know how it will happen. God is all-knowing, and we are not. We see the world through our eyes from a limited perspective, but God sees and knows all. The Lord knows the future and the past and how everything fits together like a puzzle to accomplish His will.

God is Always on Time

When Jesus told His mother that His time had not come, she probably did not fully comprehend what He was saying. God is always on time, even when we think otherwise. Scripture tells us that a day in God’s eyes is like one thousand years, and a thousand years is like a day. It may seem long as we wait for God’s timing, but it may seem like seconds for the Lord. Ultimately, we must trust in the Lord’s timing no matter what it is. Mary trusted Jesus and was probably surprised by how Jesus provided wine for the wedding feast.

Only a few people were aware of Jesus’ first miracle. He humbly went about His ministry on earth, but that did not lessen the impact on the disciples. John 2:11 This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. [4]
