Our God is the God of abundance by His very nature and seeks to pour out His abundance upon His children. Scripture frequently mentions abundance as something the Lord offers to those who believe in Him. God’s word tells us that He will provide an abundant life to all who seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. 2 Corinthians 9:8 And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.[1]
Jesus Turned Water into Wine
The story from John 2 of Jesus turning water to wine illustrates God’s abundance. The wine had run out at a wedding Jesus and His disciples were attending. Mary, Jesus’s mother, brought this to His attention but left the solution up to Jesus.
John 2:5 But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So, the servants followed his instructions. [2]
The master of ceremonies did not know where this wine had come from but was impressed with its quality. He was surprised that the best had been saved for last and mentioned this to the groom. Jesus had created as much as 180 gallons of fantastic wine.
These jugs usually held water for ceremonial cleansing, yet Jesus came to provide the cleansing for our sins in a new way. Jesus pictured His blood as wine on the night before He was crucified.
The lavish amount of wine was a picture of the salvation He came to offer and a revelation of who He was. We are promised abundant and eternal life when we believe in Jesus. John 10:10 I (Jesus) came that they may have life and have it abundantly.[3]
Walking in the Lord’s Abundance
How do we walk in the blessings and abundance the Lord wants to give us? We first need to place our faith in Jesus as our Savior and let the Holy Spirit lead us. The Holy Spirit will lead us to obey the Lord’s calling in our lives, moving us from selfishness to growing in fruits of the Spirit.
As the Lord pours out His abundance on us, He leads us to pour into others. When we sin, the Holy Spirit leads us to repentance, and as we humble ourselves, the Lord restores so His blessing can continue to flow. Unrepentant sin and bitterness prevent the Lord’s blessings in our lives and are not the Lord’s desire for us. Just as Jesus abundantly blessed the couple’s wedding feast with wine, He will do the same for us as we walk in relationship with Him.
