God can change things suddenly through significant events in the Bible and our lives, such as Pentecost. Along our faith journey, the Lord can move unexpectedly or when we are unaware. Perhaps there was a time when the Lord suddenly changed your life. Suddenly, God can save you, and your life unfolds dramatically differently. Abruptly, God can deliver you from an addiction or experience healing. Your life can end unexpectedly, and God brings you into His presence.
In God’s perfect timing, changes can be sudden. The Lord sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, it changed everything for believers. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit came upon people for a time to fulfill what God was doing through that person. After Pentecost, when believers placed their faith in Jesus as their Savior, the Holy Spirit would come and live in them throughout their lives.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
Jesus had told His disciples several times about the coming of the Holy Spirit, but now that time was drawing near. Jesus would return to heaven but not leave the disciples alone, for the Father would send the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:1On the day of Pentecost, all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting.[1]
The Holy Spirit is not seen like the wind, though its effects are. The effects of the work of the Holy Spirit would begin to affect people all over the earth, starting in Jerusalem. The source of the wind of the Holy Spirit was from heaven as the Lord began a new chapter in His work on earth.
God Sent the Holy Spirit at the Perfect Time
Jesus defeated sin, death, and the devil on the cross and through His resurrection. God had sent Jesus into the world to rescue humanity at just the right time, and now the Lord would send the Holy Spirit. In a short period, Jesus’ intervention on the cross and the work of the Holy Spirit would dramatically affect the world. The coming of the Holy Spirit would be the birth of the early church and empower believers in ways they were not before.
The Holy Spirit empowered Peter as he preached. The Holy Spirit brought empowerment, unity, and focus that the disciples and other believers had not experienced. God had begun to change them on the inside and transform them. The Holy Spirit would dwell in the hearts of believers, allowing them to live an obedient life to the Lord. In addition, the Spirit would give the children of God the power and strength they need to serve the Lord in this fallen world.
