Opening a Door to Being Cursed

Opening a door to be cursed is something we can do with our words and actions, not realizing the damage we have just done to ourselves and possibly others. A person who opens a door in a burning building can accidentally add oxygen to the fire, creating an explosion, and we can do this in the spiritual realm.

Jesus was on trial before Pilate, who knew He was innocent. Pilate declared Jesus innocent three times and tried to free Him by speaking to the crowd. Matthew 27:24 Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!” 25 And all the people yelled back, “We will take responsibility for his death—we and our children!” [1]

Opening Doors

When the people asked for Jesus’ blood to be on them and their children, it meant that the entire crowd and the leaders willingly took responsibility for Jesus’s death. Throughout history, leaders and a small group of people have opened doors affecting a nation. In this late hour, a small group of people influenced Pilate to crucify Jesus by their actions. More significantly, they rejected the Messiah the Lord had sent to save them. Our actions, both good and bad, affect those around us.

Can I Open Doors in My Life?

We can open many doors because of our sins, the most common being resentment and unforgiveness. Perhaps someone has hurt you somehow, which is wrong, but when we become bitter, the enemy uses this as a second and more subtle attack to tear us down. Often, this is someone close to us, such as a friend, coworker, spouse, child, fellow church member, or neighbor.

The other door that satan uses is rebellion against God and human authority. When I deliberately sin, I am rebelling against God. In the trial of Jesus, the people rebelled against Him. Perhaps you have opened a door in your life that has let the enemy in, but the good news is we can close that door. We can confess our sins to God and ask for His forgiveness and strength. 1 John 1:9But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.[2]

Prayer to Close Doors

Heavenly Father, I come before you today because I have opened doors in my life because of my sin. I have become burdened with bitterness and resentment. Lord, forgive me and help to forgive the person who wronged me. In other areas of my life, I have rebelled against You, leading to the suffering of others and myself. Holy Spirit, I invite you to work in my life to transform me, breaking off the enemy’s chains. Thank you, Jesus, that you died for my sins, making it possible for me to come to Your throne of grace and receive forgiveness. Amen.
