Are you listening to the Lord? This is a question that will define your life. Free will gives us choices daily to follow the Lord or our sinful nature. When I listen and follow the Lord’s leading, He keeps me on the right path to fulfill His fantastic plan for my life. The Lord’s path through life is not always easy, but it is fulfilling and improves me.
As we follow the Lord’s voice, He leads us away from selfish choices that are destructive to us and those around us. Paul tells us in Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. [1] You may be struggling today to follow what the Lord has for you, and He wants to encourage you to keep following Him and to trust Him.
Listen to God’s Interruptions
In the final week of His life on earth, Jesus taught in Jerusalem. For some, what they heard from Jesus would change their lives as they turned to the Lord. Others disregarded the Lord’s teachings, not realizing the opportunity the Lord had for them to repent and turn from their sins.
In the parable of the evil farmers, Jesus told the chief priest and elders of the people a story to help them see their sins. As Jesus told the parable, it is clear the wicked tenants are the religious leaders who killed the prophets and want to kill Jesus. They listened to what Jesus said but didn’t want to turn from their wicked ways and turn to the Lord. In God’s grace, He spoke to them personally to break through into their lives so they could believe in Him and have eternal life.
Don’t Wait as the Lord Calls You
If there is a time of urgency, it is when the Lord calls you and breaks into your life. Jesus prefaced His parable to the religious leaders by telling them to listen. Matthew 21:33 “Now listen to another story. A certain landowner planted a vineyard, built a wall around it, dug a pit for pressing out the grape juice, and built a lookout tower. Then he leased the vineyard to tenant farmers and moved to another country.[2]
When we pray to the Lord, we can ask Him, “Is there anything You would like to say to me?” As we still our hearts, we give time for the Lord to speak to us, to guide us, correct us, and encourage us on our journey. The Lord often intervenes in our lives as we come to critical intersections.
We benefit as we follow the Lord’s guidance and correction. But, we must to humble ourselves to receive what He has for us. James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. [3]
