The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

The women were puzzled when there was no body in the tomb. The angels told the women, “Don’t look for God among the dead.” Luke 24: The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead![1]

Jews anticipated that there would be a resurrection at the end of the age. They did not anticipate Messiah being killed and rising in the middle of the age. The angels gave a slight rebuke as they explained the empty grave. Basically, they said Jesus is alive, so don’t look for Him in a tomb.

Realizing the Truth of the Resurrection

Even though Jesus had predicted His resurrection, the women had not understood. It would take some time for them to comprehend the angels’ message. It probably sounded like a fairy tale at first. They were puzzled and had to see the empty tomb for themselves. They would fully realize the truth of the resurrection when they saw Jesus for themselves.

These women went to the disciples with what had happened, but they, too, struggled to believe. Luke 24 11 But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it.[2] Just as it took time for Jesus’ followers to understand the truth of the resurrection, new believers may need some time to think through what Jesus’ resurrection means to them. We must allow them time to be in awe at what Jesus has done for them.

Still Looking for Jesus Among the Dead

Some study the Bible as a mere historical document. They don’t realize that it is a living Word. Scripture is not just dusty facts because Jesus reigns in the hearts of believers through the power of the Holy Spirit. Worship services should not be a dutiful memorial service to Jesus but praise to a Lord who is involved in our daily lives.

Jesus continues to be the head of His church and wants to be involved in our lives. It is sad when people forget that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is available to believers. We must remember to depend on guidance from Jesus so we don’t live defeated lives. Jesus wants to restore our dead, sinful lives into a purposeful life that builds His kingdom.

Do you look for Jesus among the living? Do you expect him to be active in the world and in the church? Look for signs of his power—they are all around you. To learn why you don’t look for God among the dead, listen here:
