Today, we hear a lot about climate change, but we see God’s climate change following Noah’s flood. Scripture gives us insight into the earth’s climate before the flood. Genesis 2:5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land, and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground.[1]
Before the flood, there was a different ecosystem that did not require rain because God watered the earth differently. When God brought the flood upon the world, He also changed the climate. The Bible indicates that until the flood, it had never rained.
As Noah and his family exited the ark, they entered a new world. The other people and the civilizations they created were gone. Noah built an altar for the Lord to thank Him for saving His family. Genesis 8:20Noah then took some of every clean animal and some of every clean bird and offered burnt offerings on the altar.[2]
God Promises a Stable Climate
God was very pleased with Noah and made profound statements about the future of humanity and the climate. Genesis 8:21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” [3]
Life can have many twists and turns, but we can be thankful that God tells us the earth’s climate will be steady. Yes, there will be storms and droughts, but there will be no significant climate changes as long as humanity is on the earth. In God’s faithfulness, seedtime and harvest will provide food for the earth’s people. God’s provision promises His grace and mercy, although we don’t deserve this because of our sinfulness.
We, Too, Can Be Thankful to God
As Noah built an altar and thanked the Lord, we must also thank Him for what He has done for us. If you have placed your faith in Jesus, you can be thankful He rescued you when He gave His life for you on the cross. We may experience great storms in life, but the Lord is always with us and is our ark of safety.
The Lord promises to give the people of the earth ongoing seasons. The Lord also gives us seasons of life and is with us each step of the way. People may break their promises, but the Lord never will. Here are wonderful verses to meditate on about God’s faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. [4]
