God uses the unlikely to build His Kingdom. Will He use you? The answer is yes because God has more for us! When I was thirty-seven years old, I sensed the Lord calling me to be a pastor. My background was not in theology, music, or writing, but in manufacturing engineering. I am a prime example of the Lord using the unlikely.

When the Lord calls us, I think most people look around and think the Lord must be talking to someone else. At least that is the way I felt when God called me. Through out the Bible the Lord calls people that the world would say should be thrown back like a small fish.

When the Lord called Gideon to be a leader in ancient Israel, he had no confidence in doing what the Lord was asking him. Judges 6:14 Then the Lord turned to him and said, “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” 15 “But Lord,” Gideon replied, “how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the whole tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least in my entire family!” [1]

Do You Believe You are Unqualified?

Is the Lord calling you to step out in faith today when you don’t think you are qualified? If so, you are not alone. As you step out in faith, the Lord will help you fulfill your destiny. This is a destiny you can accomplish only with His assistance.

Jacob’s sons will become the nation of Israel. Yet, they seem to be the most unlikely people possible that the Lord could use. You could characterize Jacob’s family as extremely dysfunctional with one father and four different mothers.

Genesis 37:1So Jacob settled again in the land of Canaan, where his father had lived as a foreigner. This is the account of Jacob and his family. When Joseph was seventeen years old, he often tended his father’s flocks. He worked for his half brothers, the sons of his father’s wives Bilhah and Zilpah. But Joseph reported to his father some of the bad things his brothers were doing. Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other children because Joseph had been born to him in his old age. So one day Jacob had a special gift made for Joseph—a beautiful robe. But his brothers hated Joseph because their father loved him more than the rest of them. They couldn’t say a kind word to him. [2]

God Calls the Unlikely so We Rely on Him

When God calls us, He begins to transform us into a different person. Over time Gideon became a different person. As the story of Jacob’s sons unfolds, they will go through a time of refinement. The Lord calls the unlikely because He has more for us then we have ever experienced.

As the Lord leads us into the deeper water, we must depend on Him more and more because we have never been this way before. As we look increasingly to God for His guidance, we must look up to Him and away from ourselves.

“The person who has all the skills but doesn’t have God is completely unqualified. The person who is completely overwhelmed by the idea of God’s assignment but is on fire for the Lord is God’s first choice.”[3]  Tom Neary
