Blessing others is a gift the Lord gives us as He works through us. When we receive a blessing from others, it lifts us up and makes us feel cared for. I was listening to a podcast about a water well ministry to foreign countries and what a blessing it was. As communities received their wells, it was also a time of sharing God’s love by word and deed. Just as the well provided clean water, the sharing Good News of Jesus was an opportunity to share the living water of the Gospel. It is our sinful nature to think of ourselves first, but something happens inside when we begin to think of others before ourselves.
Joseph Blessed Others
Joseph suffered the hardship of being sold into slavery by his brothers and found himself an enslaved person in Egypt. Many people in that situation would have been bitter, only thinking of themselves and making their situation worse. This was not the case for Joseph, who made the best of a difficult situation. Joseph was blessed by the Lord and passed that blessing on to others.
Genesis 39: 5 From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the Lord began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished. 6 So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! [1]
You Can Be a Blessing to Others
The Apostle Paul writes about the fruits of the Spirit, which are the character traits the Lord wants to develop in you to bless others. Galatians 5:22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! [2]
Think about how you can make a difference in those around you through these gifts. You can give a kind word of encouragement, bring joy into your work or home environment, be gentle to others, and be calm in messy situations. What is in the atmosphere makes a difference; when we bless those around us, it transforms the atmosphere. God’s Holy Spirit develops and shows His Fruit in us when we place our faith in Jesus. When we become followers of Jesus, He begins to do and in through us what only He can do, which is to make us like Him.
