The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Humility makes a difference no matter where you find yourself in life. The most pleasing people I have come to know personally are humble people. Humble people are incredible role models in life as well as excellent people to be around.

An acquaintance I had known for several years worked at a grocery store, and one day I shared with him about our children’s outreach ministry that included a free meal. My friend said he would like to help and, to my surprise, was the owner of a chain of grocery stores. He allowed us to purchase food from him at significantly reduced costs.

Colossians 3:12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.[1]

Joseph Demonstrates Humility

The prisoner Joseph was brought to Pharaoh at the recommendation of the cupbearer. Two years earlier, Joseph had interpreted the cupbearer’s dream and what he said came true. Genesis 41:15 Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I had a dream last night, and no one here can tell me what it means. But I have heard that when you hear about a dream, you can interpret it.” 16 “It is beyond my power to do this,” Joseph replied. “But God can tell you what it means and set you at ease.” [2]

With humility, Joseph does not puff himself up but points to the Lord as the authentic interpreter of the dream. God tells Joseph that the dreams mean there will be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of drought.

Jesus is Our Model of Humility

The greatest act of humility occurred almost 2000 years ago when Jesus gave his life for sinners like you and me. As we read the Scriptures, the Lord commands us to be humble.

  • Colossians 3:12You must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.[4]
  • Matthew 18:So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. [5]

I believe if we are honest, we struggle with being humble, but with God’s help, we can grow in humility. These are some observations I have observed about humble people. They take time to acknowledge others instead of themselves. Humble people praise the Lord for what He has allowed them to accomplish. They are thankful for others who were role models in their life, teaching them the importance of humility through their example.
