Changing the way you think is one of the most powerful ways to transform your life, but it is also challenging. A common theme in the Scriptures is that the Lord is a God of intervention who works through the Holy Spirit to make us aware we are on the wrong path. Our enemy works to deceive people who don’t even realize they need to change their thinking. Other times the Holy Spirit breaks through when we have made a total mess of our lives, and we cry out to God. Psalm 18:6 But in my distress I cried out to the Lord; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears. [1]
God Gives the Blueprint on How to Change Our Thinking
Paul gives spiritual insight into how the Lord works in our hearts to change the way we think. Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good, pleasing, and perfect. [2]
The world’s customs often oppose God and deceive and tempt people to go down destructive paths in life. The enemy tempts people to focus on themselves and their desires. As the Lord draws us into a relationship with Him and transforms us, it changes our thinking. As our heart changes, what we think about and do changes, which is the Lord’s desire for you.
Focus on Good Things
Philippians 4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.[3] Something supernatural happens when we spend time in God’s word. God’s word washes over us in many ways, giving us renewed hope, direction, and purpose in life. This is the power of God’s word to change a person’s heart that Paul writes about. 2 Corinthians 5:17This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! [4] The old life is the old way of thinking which is selfish and focuses on our sinful desires. Do you desire the Lord to remodel your life?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we confess our selfishness. We know there are times when our natural bent to self takes over, and we confess and ask You to search our hearts! Renew a right spirit in us, God, and cleanse us from our hidden sins. Bring any destructive thought patterns and habits into the light, God! Let the love and light of our Lord Jesus Christ shine through our minds and hearts, motivating how we navigate our daily lives. In Jesus’ name, amen. [5]
