Walking in the deception of darkness is a dangerous place to be. Paul gives us insight into the deception of spiritual darkness. 2 Corinthians 4:4 Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.[1]
The Lord always calls people to turn away from their sins and toward Him. It is here that He can give us life, but we can refuse to listen. Jesus tells us that we can take two different paths in life.Matthew 7:13You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. 14 But the gateway to life is very narrow, and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it. [2] The path we take in life affects our life today and our eternity.
What About This Generation?
As Jesus spoke to the crowd, he compared the people to those walking down the broad road. Luke 7:31To what can I compare the people of this generation?” Jesus asked. “How can I describe them?[3] In this verse, Jesus speaks of those who had rejected Him. They were critical of Jesus because He challenged their spiritual beliefs and rituals. They knew information about God but did not have a relationship with Him.
Luke 7:32 They are like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t weep.’
33 For John the Baptist didn’t spend his time eating bread or drinking wine, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ 35 But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it. [4] Like the children, the Jewish leadership complained about John the Baptist and Jesus no matter what they said or did.
How Will You Respond?
Every generation has an opportunity to respond to the good news of Jesus and take the narrow road to eternal life. While the enemy tries to blind and deceive people, the Lord uses His word and the work of the Holy Spirit to open our eyes. Psalm 119:130 The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.[5]
A friend had walked down the broad road for most of his life until suddenly, the Holy Spirit removed the blindness from his eyes. Like scales falling from his eyes, he quickly repented and turned to God, which dramatically transformed his life. If you are on the narrow road, you are blessed; if you are on the broad road, the Lord, in His mercy, calls you to come to Him and repent. Are you walking in the darkness of deception?
