The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

A prophecy foretells God’s plan for the future. Many times, God’s message is conveyed through imagery. Prophesy is to announce a message from God, and the one who does is a prophet. Isaiah 9:1 is a prophecy about the coming of Jesus written 700 years before He was born. This prophecy tells us that the Messiah would minister in Galilee, which was conquered by the Assyrians, as recorded in 2 Kings 15:29.

The Assyrians would usher in a time of darkness over Galilee, but this time would not last forever. During the days of Isaiah, Galilee’s outlook looked bleak, but Isaiah foretold a time when the Messiah would bring God’s glory to this area. Isaiah 9:Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. [1]

Prophecy reminds us of God’s faithfulness in the past and His promises for the future. Galilee would feel the wrath of the Assyrians, but through Isaiah’s prophecy, we learn that Jesus will invade this area with the light of His love.

Prophecies for Today

This week’s text allowed those living during the time of Isaiah to look to the future with confidence. Today, we live in a world of darkness, like Galilee was when the Assyrians conquered them. Just as in the days of Isaiah, there are prophecies in the New Testament that foretell the future. God told the Apostle John about an exciting future of the world.

Revelation 21:1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.[2]

Only God knows the future, but one day, this will be the future for all humanity who have placed their faith in Jesus. Knowing the future gives us peace, knowing that God has everything under control and that the time of darkness on earth will be short-lived.

Isaiah 9:1-2 Fulfilled

The time of darkness over the land of Zebulun and Naphtali was a time of humbling, just as the prophecy had predicted. When the Assyrians conquered a land, they would deport the local population and repopulate it with others. Those who resettled there were pagans and Gentiles, and so Isaiah called the area Galilee of the Gentiles. Eventually, Jews moved back into the area, but the spiritual darkness would impact the area until Jesus came to minister there.

Are you concerned about the future? As a believer, take the hand of Jesus and leave the darkness behind. If you don’t know the Lord, ask Jesus into your heart, and you will never be the same. To learn how prophecy foretells, listen here:
