Living out our faith is often a journey with family, as we see in the story of Abram. Genesis 12:5 Abram took his wife, Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all his wealth—his livestock and all the people he had taken into his household at Haran—and headed for the land of Canaan. [1] As we read this story, we often think of Abram, but his wife, nephew, and several people in his household also make the journey. God’s call on Abram would impact not only him but all those who went with him, demonstrating His trust in the Lord.
This choice illustrates that faith is personal and communal, impacting those around us. God’s call on our lives is like a ripple in a pond because our faith walk affects those around us, especially those closest to us. Thirty years ago, the Lord called me to be a pastor.
That has affected not only me but also my wife, and three children. Through this calling, the Lord dramatically affected us spiritually, transforming us into different people. Our calling by the Lord is often the foundation for other family members who journey with us.
Jesus Calls Us to Make Decisions That Affect Our Family
Jesus calls us to make decisions for our families and communities that align with His will. He urges believers to trust His plan. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. [2] Making decisions for our family is a profound responsibility because they can have a significant impact. When you consider that, it illustrates how much we need to seek the Lord.
Where is the Lord leading you, and how is that affecting your family? Perhaps the Lord is calling you today to a more profound commitment as you journey with your family. It is never too late to speak a blessing over your family or to grow in God’s word. As we grow in our relationship with the Lord, it has an ongoing effect on our journey with our immediate family and the family of God.
Aligning Our Will With God
We must ask ourselves, am I aligning my goals with God’s will? Or am I going my own way? Earlier in my life, I chose my way until God intervened and gently showed me the foolishness of that pursuit.
God created you for a specific purpose to fulfill in His Kingdom. Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. [3] The greatest gift we can give our family is to be a spiritual blessing to them throughout our lives.
