The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

The Lamp of Truth, mentioned in Mark 4:21-23, illuminates our perception of God’s Kingdom and our role in it. It is often the darkness of falsehood that leads people astray and away from God. Jesus asks, Mark 4:21 Then Jesus asked them, “Would anyone light a lamp and then put it under a basket or under a bed? Of course not! A lamp is placed on a stand, where its light will shine.[1]

In this verse, Jesus challenges our understanding of truth. Truth is meant to be displayed, shedding light and guiding. In a world filled with misinformation, doubt, and despair, God’s Word remains a beacon of light. It exposes darkness, clears confusion, and shows the way to life. Just as a lamp is useless if hidden, Biblical truth must be shared and applied. Jesus teaches that if we have the light of truth, we should not hoard it. We need to let it shine so that all may see. Several years ago, it was our mission team’s willingness to share the good news of Jesus with a family that led them to embrace Him as their Savior.

Light Illuminates What is in the Darkness.

Mark 4: 22 For everything that is hidden will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will be brought to light.[2] In a profound sense, the Lord has chosen to lift the veil on the mystery of redemption through His Son, Jesus, so that people can be saved. God’s plan, though sometimes hidden now, will eventually be revealed. Likewise, our true character, motives, and the effects of our actions — whether good or bad — will ultimately come to light.

The Lord is not trying to shame us but lovingly invites us to live honestly and openly before Him and others. He encourages us to embrace honesty, admit our sins, and act with godly character. He also reminds us that the seeds of truth sown in quiet moments, acts of kindness done in secret, and prayers whispered in solitude will not go unnoticed by God. They are part of a larger tapestry that, in due time, will be fully revealed, demonstrating the power and presence of God’s truth at work in the world.

Listening and Understanding

Finally, Jesus concludes with a vital exhortation: Mark 4: 23 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand. [3]  This isn’t just a casual remark but a call to attentive spiritual listening that goes beyond simply hearing. To understand is to put God’s words into action. In my life, as I moved from merely listening to truly understanding, God began to radically transform me. Like many of us, our spiritual journey has its ups and downs as God patiently works with us.

Biblical truths require a receptive heart and obedience, as the power of the Lamp of Truth is only experienced when actively embraced. It prompts us to go beyond a superficial understanding and enables the Lord to transform us. In a noisy world of competing voices, discerning the Lamp of Truth demands intentionality and humility. By embracing these truths, we become not only recipients but also carriers of the light, reflecting it into our lives and the world, fulfilling its purpose.
