The power of parables is their ability to use something familiar to explain a deep spiritual truth. Chapter 4 of Mark tells of several of the parables Jesus used to teach. It includes the Parable of the Sower, the Parable of the Lamp, the Parable of the Growing Seed, and the Parable of the Mustard Seed.
Mark finished this part of his Gospel with this comment. Mark 4: 33 Jesus used many similar stories and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could understand. 34 In fact, in his public ministry he never taught without using parables; but afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained everything to them. [1]
A Mixed Crowd of Listeners
Jesus was well aware of those who followed Him halfheartedly, doing so for entertainment. Some were outrightly hostile, and because they had already hardened their hearts, no amount of teaching would change that. By teaching with parables, Jesus distinguished between those who were curious and those who were true seekers.
“A parable begins innocently as a picture that arrests our attention and arouses our interest. But as we study the picture, it becomes a mirror in which we suddenly see ourselves. If we continue to look by faith, the mirror becomes a window through which we see God and His truth. How we respond to that truth will determine what further truth God will teach us.” W.Wiersbe [2]
A parable allows seekers to see a spiritual truth, but conceals it from those who are too lazy or stubborn to recognize it. Thus, a parable requires one to think and act in response. So, parables don’t obscure spiritual truth; instead, they clarify and deepen it for those willing to listen.
Be a Seeker of the Kingdom
Jesus taught that those who sought the Kingdom of God would be rewarded. Matthew 6: 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. [3] The parables of Mark 4 are all about the Kingdom. For it is coming in a different way than the people expected.
There will be various responses to the parables. However, for those willing to seek God, they will begin to understand God’s plan for fruitfulness. The Lord is the one who controls the growth of the Kingdom. It will start small but will cover the whole earth. The more we understand God’s truth, the better our capacity to understand more. But we must live out this truth as increased knowledge brings increased responsibility in the Kingdom.
