The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

You may wonder why a loving God prunes us. Jesus provides insight into the importance of pruning. John 15:1 I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.[1]

Not long ago, I drove past a neglected vineyard. The vines had many dead branches, and weeds grew among the vines, taking up vital moisture needed by the plants. Without proper pruning and care, this once fruitful vineyard was now not very productive.

In the Old Testament, grapes symbolized Israel’s fruitfulness in doing the work of the Lord on earth. You and I are like a vineyard. Without the Lord’s pruning and care, we become spiritually unproductive. Imagine the Lord looking down on your life and how much He longs to transform you into the most amazing vineyard. Only God sees what we can become, and with His ongoing intervention, He changes our lives.

Pruning Can Be Painful

Pruning can be challenging because our natural tendency is to add things to our lives that may seem reasonable to the world but harm our relationship with God. Sometimes, we need to be honest with the Lord and ask Him to prune our lives because we lack the strength or ability to do it ourselves. When God trims things away from us, we gain new opportunities in our relationship with Him that we may have never had before.

When I became a pastor, the Lord removed a profession I had spent twelve years in. Only years later did I realize how vital that pruning was for my spiritual growth. In addition, God will clear ongoing sin in our lives as we confess it and receive forgiveness. In God’s strength, He helps us overcome the sins in our lives that hinder His plans for us.

We can be thankful that when the Lord prunes us, He removes various things from our lives to help us be more productive. This process can be uncomfortable, even painful, as God removes things we might cling to—even good things—to redirect us onto a different path in life. God will remove good things to make room for better things.

God Desires Us to Go Deeper With Him

Ultimately, the message of John 15:1-2 is one of hope and divine purpose. A loving God prunes us because He desires us to be truly fruitful. This reflects His character and expands His kingdom. The pruning process invites us to deeper intimacy with Him. This is a call to surrender parts of our lives that might hinder our spiritual growth or reduce our capacity to impact others.

During seasons of difficulty, loss, or uncomfortable change, we can trust that our Vinedresser is working—shaping us, refining us, and preparing us for a harvest far beyond what we could accomplish alone. Embrace the pruning, knowing the hands holding the shears are those of a loving Father, dedicated to your ultimate good and abundant fruitfulness. To learn more, listen here:
