The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Today’s Scripture & Insight: John 14:15

Does God really reward obedience? The answer to that question is a Yes! The Lord loves when His children follow His guidance and direction. Jesus tells us in John 14:15 – “If you love me, you will obey what I command. [1] As we grow in love for the Lord, we move from a “have to” and transition to a “want to.” I have yet to discover a person in the Bible who disobeyed God and it worked out for them. Not one! But I have found that every person who obeyed God in the Bible was blessed. Their journey might not have been easy, but they found fulfillment and peace along their spiritual journey. The Lord will do the same for us!

There have been times in my life where I clearly understood from the Lord what I was to do. In some cases, I thought I knew better so I disobeyed and did the opposite of what God asked. I decided to hit the override button. Every time I did that, I suffered the consequences of my actions. The Lord warned me, and I chose to disobey. There have been other times in my life where God gave me clear direction and I obeyed and was blessed. Numerous times I didn’t understand the Lord’s blessings until time passed and I gained perspective. That is when I have really grown in understanding the importance of obedience.

In our story of the Tower of Babel, the people willing disobeyed the Lord. It seemed like disobedience and disrespect to God was their mission in life. To correct their behavior the Lord, in His grace, scattered them to different parts of the world. In God’s mercy, the Lord was teaching them the importance of obedience.

Where is the Lord calling you to obey in your life? It may be a little thing or a big thing. I do know as we listen to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, He will make known what His will is. Also, I have learned over time that I need the Lord’s help to obey. I have often prayed, “Lord help to obey.” Maybe you are like me. The good news is the Lord is right there waiting to listen to our prayers. He is right there waiting to give us the strength to obey as we ask. Wow! That is a God who truly loves us and wants the very best for us each day.

In closing, remember the words of Hebrews 11:6, “The Lord rewards those who earnestly seek him.
