The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Today’s Scripture & Insight: Matthew 6:33

When I was seven years old, my grandma died after a short battle with cancer. Although this was many years ago, I can still remember going with my mother as she took grandma to her cancer treatments. My grandma remained faithful through this difficult journey. She knew that the Lord would take care of her, no matter what happened. Then one day her battle was over and she stepped into eternity.

In many ways, grandma was a very wise person because decades before she battled cancer, she became a follower of Jesus. She did not do this on her own, but was drawn to faith by the work of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who opens us up to believe. She was a wise woman who sought out the Lord during her life.

In our story, the Wise Men also sought out Jesus. What were the circumstances that set the Wise Men in motion to travel hundreds of miles to see the newborn King? We do not know. We do know that their hearts were open for what God’s plan for them was. We know they had to set aside several months of their time and treasure to travel such a great distance. They could have easily given up on their journey and gone home, but they continued to follow the star of the newborn King.

Our spiritual journey in life is long with many turns and twists along the way. There are trials and temptations and other difficulties that seem to attack us. In our story, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Judea, during the reign of the evil King Herod.

About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” [1] Matthew 2:2.

How about you? Are you seeking after the Lord today for all that He has for you? A man once said, “God wants more for us than we want for ourselves.” How would your life change if each day you decided to seek the Lord for what He had for you?

Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” [2]
