The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Today’s Scripture & Insight: John 16:13

In the story of the Wise Men, the Lord tells them supernaturally through a dream not to return to Herod. Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!”

After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! 11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. [1] Matthew 2:7-12.

What about you? Will the Lord guide you also supernaturally? The answer to that question is: yes, He will!

The Lord can guide us through dreams like the Wise Men. And He uses the work of the Holy Spirit to guide us.

Before He ascended to heaven, Jesus promised to send us an Advocate, a Helper who would always be with us. John 16:7, “But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don’t, the Advocate won’t come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you.[2]

God’s Spirit is with every person who has a placed their faith in Jesus each and every second of every day. He is only a prayer away.

The Holy Spirit guides us to the truth: The Bible teaches that Jesus is Truth, and the Truth can set us free; free from sin and death. The Lord can free from anything that hinders our relationship with Him. We find the truth by allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us to the truth about Jesus. That is how Jesus can become our Savior. The Spirit will also guide us in our lives as we seek Him through prayer.

John 16:13 –  When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard[3]

The Holy Spirit guides us away from our desire to sin: Through prayer we are able to be led by the Spirit. The lust of the flesh includes all sins that would lead us to follow our earthly desires. When we are walking with the Spirit, He will guide us into His plans for our life.

The Holy Spirit guides us to the will of God:  When David prayed, he asked God to teach him and lead him in the way of God, not simply the easiest way. No matter where God’s will leads us, we can trust Him to be with us every step of the way. We can learn God’s will for our lives as we learn more about Him through prayer and through His words in the Bible.

Psalm 143:10 –  Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing. [4]
