Psalm 8: 3b But when I look up and see the splendor of your skies,
such wonder and workmanship above, I have to ask you this question:
4 Compared to all this cosmic glory, why would you bother with puny, mortal man or be infatuated with Adam’s sons?
5 Yet what honor you have given to men, created only a little lower than the creator God, crowned like kings and queens with glory and magnificence.
6 You have delegated to them mastery over all you have made,
making everything subservient to their authority, placing earth itself under the feet of your image-bearers…
9 Lord, your name is so great and powerful. People everywhere see your majesty! What glory streams from the heavens, filling the earth with the fame of your name![1]
God had given David insight through the natural revelation, the stars at night as he shepherded his sheep. David was in awe of creation and how God cares for everything, including human beings. He knew that humans were made in the image of God with the purpose to steward creation. Gen.1: 26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”[2]
We, as sinful humans, haven’t always been good stewards of creation. Even though we were created in the image of God, that was corrupted by the fall into sin. This Psalm is quoted in Hebrews 2 where the author gives us even more insight: Heb 2:8, “You gave them authority over all things.” Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.
The good news is that Jesus came to restore creation to the original state. His work on the cross and His resurrection began the restoration, but it will not be complete until Jesus returns. Then will come the new heaven and new earth. If you want to know more about the restoration of Jesus, click on the new believer tab on this webpage.
