Psalm 19: His teachings make us joyful and radiate his light; his precepts are so pure! His commands, how they challenge us to keep close to his heart!
The revelation-light of his word makes my spirit shine radiant.
Every one of the Lord’s commands is right; following them brings cheer.
Nothing he says ever needs to be changed.
10 The rarest treasures of life are found in his truth. That’s why I prize God’s word like others prize the finest gold. Nothing brings the soul such sweetness as seeking his living words.
11 For they warn us, his servants, and keep us from following the wicked way, giving a lifetime guarantee: great success to every obedient soul![1]

Remember at this time, David’s Bible would have only been the first five books of our Old Testament and a few Psalms. Yet, even though David speaks of the law of God, he sees God as a protector and not a judge. David understands that God’s Word can bring refreshment to his soul. It is trustworthy and he can depend on it. God’s Word is right and desirable.

God doesn’t change, so even today, God’s Word will refresh your soul. It is still trustworthy and right. Often, we of the 21st century see God’s commands as confining and overly restrictive. Many picture God as a white-bearded man with a giant stick, just waiting to slap us if we get out of line. David has a very different picture; God is a refuge and provides stability in David’s life. God still desires to do that for you.
