Psalm 23: Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me
all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.[1]

The Hebrew word used for love is “hesed” which is the covenantal love promised by God. God does pursue, or chase us down, with His unfailing love. The song “Reckless Love” written by Cory Asbury, Caleb Culver, and Ran Jackson describes this well:

“O the overwhelming never-ending reckless Love of God
O it chases me down fights ’til I’m found, Leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, Still You give Yourself away
O the overwhelming never-ending reckless Love of God.”[2]

David understood the character of God and the character of God doesn’t change. Christ still pursues us.

  • 1 John 3: 16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.[3]
  • John 10: Yes, I (Jesus) am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.[4]

David knew God as his good shepherd and now we know Jesus as the good shepherd. If you don’t know Jesus as your shepherd, be assured that Jesus wants to lead you to good pastures and along the right path. He will be your guardian, protector and guide for eternity if you allow Him to.
