The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Escape from Darkness" — John 12:46 (What Jesus Did!)

A few years ago, we were on a bicycle trip that took us through an old railroad tunnel. The tunnel was long and dark, and you needed to walk your bicycle through with a flashlight. As you went further into the tunnel eventually you could see the light at the other end. It was literally the light at the end of the tunnel.

In our story, the Hebrew people were in a dark place. Not dark in the sense of light, but dark because they were slaves in Egypt.

Exodus 3:Then the Lord told him, “I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their cries of distress because of their harsh slave drivers. Yes, I am aware of their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt into their own fertile and spacious land. It is a land flowing with milk and honey—the land where the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites now live. Look! The cry of the people of Israel has reached me, and I have seen how harshly the Egyptians abuse them. 10 Now go, for I am sending you to Pharaoh. You must lead my people Israel out of Egypt.” [1]

What was the Lord going to do in our story? He was going to lead them out of the slavery in Egypt and take them to a new land that was filled with milk and honey. The Lord was going to take them from darkness to light. In the Scriptures Jesus calls Himself the Light of the World.

  • John 8:12Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” [2]
  • John 12:46 “I (Jesus) have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.”[3]

Lord leads us out of darkness into His marvelous light as we come to faith. 1 Peter 2:But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. [4]

How has your life changed since Jesus drew you to faith and into His light? If you don’t know Jesus yet, He is drawing you into His light as you read this. The Apostle Paul writes in 2 Cor. 6:2, “For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.” [5]

Sinners prayer

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

If you decided to repent of your sins and receive Christ today, welcome to God’s family. Now, as a way to grow closer to Him, the Bible tells us to follow up on our commitment.

  • Get baptized as commanded by Christ.
  • Tell someone else about your new faith in Christ.
  • Spend time with God each day. It does not have to be a long period of time. Just develop the daily habit of praying to Him and reading His Word. Ask God to increase your faith and your understanding of the Bible.
  • Seek fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Develop a group of believing friends to answer your questions and support you.
  • Find a local church where you can worship God.
