I remember taking a walk one winter evening. I was in the country, a long way from any city lights. It was a clear sky and I had a clear view of the Milky Way. The stars were amazing, and I was thankful for God’s creation of the stars.
Is. 40:26 Look up into the heavens. Who created all the stars? He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each by its name. Because of his great power and incomparable strength, not a single one is missing. [1]
1 Chronicles 29:11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things.[2]
The Lord shows His majesty in our story of Moses and the Hebrews. Ex.19:16 On the morning of the third day, thunder roared, and lightning flashed, and a dense cloud came down on the mountain. There was a long, loud blast from a ram’s horn, and all the people trembled. 17 Moses led them out from the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 All of Mount Sinai was covered with smoke because the Lord had descended on it in the form of fire. The smoke billowed into the sky like smoke from a brick kiln, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 As the blast of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God thundered his reply. 20 The Lord came down on the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So, Moses climbed the mountain.[3]
What was the purpose of God showing just a small degree of His power and majesty? I believe the Lord wanted to get their attention and have a deeper reverence for His holiness. The Lord tells us in Proverbs 9:10, “Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment.” [4] The fear they are talking about is a righteous fear. Sometimes as sinful people we don’t understand the holiness, righteousness, and power of God.
It was this holy, righteous, all powerful God that stepped into time over 2000 years ago to take our punishment upon the cross. The Lord Jesus showed His great love by His actions of sacrifice on the cross. No one loves you more or cares for you more than Jesus. Take time today and give thanks to the Lord for all He has done for you!
