The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Have you ever asked the Lord for a sign when you were unsure of what He was asking you to do? In our story, Gideon asks for a sign to reassure himself that the Lord was directing him. God does give Gideon a sign because of His mercy and patience.

17 Gideon replied, “If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the Lord speaking to me. Gideon then goes home to prepare an offering of bread and a cooked young goat. The angel of God said to him, “Place the meat and the unleavened bread on this rock, and pour the broth over it.” And Gideon did as he was told. 21 Then the angel of the Lord touched the meat and bread with the tip of the staff in his hand, and fire flamed up from the rock and consumed all he had brought. And the angel of the Lord disappeared. [1] Judges 6:17, & 20-21.

Does God still give signs to us today? Yes, He does. The most common one we have all observed is the rainbow. Genesis 9:13 –  I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth.[2]

God absolutely still speaks to humans today through signs. Signs don’t have to be bush on fire or an angelic messenger like Gideon experienced. Signs are simply the supernatural breaking through to the natural world, the supernatural made real in the physical. Signs from God are unexplainable yet undeniable. There is no indication from the Bible that miraculous signs stopped when the Bible was finished. In fact, what we see from Scripture is the timelessness and unchanging nature of God: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday today and forever” Hebrews 13:8. So, if God remains the same and God spoke through signs and wonders time and time again, why wouldn’t He continue to do so today?

Don’t be afraid to seek a sign from God. Make sure your eyes are open, your heart is humble, and your ears are listening. Dig into Scripture, spend time in prayer, watch the circumstances around you and seek the wise counsel of other followers of Jesus. Don’t be surprised that the Lord communicates to you in a way that you did not expect. God wants you to move forward in faith and confidence as He reveals His plan.
