Have you thought about the role of angels in our lives? Although we don’t see the angels in the invisible realm, they are just as real as the invisible air we breathe. In the book of Hebrews, the Lord gives us insight in the relationship between angels and man. Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
We learn that angels are servants sent to care for God’s children. If you become a believer in Jesus, God’s angels are always with you to care for you in many ways. God knows all things including those who will become His children.
An Angel Visits Zechariah
Zechariah was going about his work in the temple and God had something very special for him that day. The angel Gabriel would visit him. Luke 1:11 While Zechariah was in the sanctuary, an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the incense altar. 12 Zechariah was shaken and overwhelmed with fear when he saw him.
Angel means messenger and Gabriel had a special message for Zechariah. Zechariah and his wife would have a special baby in their old age who was to be named John. Angels in their glory are frightening to mankind and so the angel tells Zechariah, “Don’t be afraid!”
Angels are Powerful
Both the Old and New Testaments speak of angels as having great power. A single angel killed 185,000 Assyrians soldiers in a single night. 2 Kings 19:35 That night the angel of the Lord went out to the Assyrian camp and killed 185,000 Assyrian soldiers. When the surviving Assyrians woke up the next morning, they found corpses everywhere. An angel rolled back the massive gravestone at the resurrection of Jesus (Matthew 28:2), and another angel delivered Peter from prison (Acts 12:7).
As believers in Jesus, we don’t need to fear angels since they give heavenly protection. Psalm 34:7 For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. As people of faith, we can be thankful for the many blessings the Lord has given us especially His heavenly angels who protect us each day.
