As a small child, I can remember being excited about receiving Christmas gifts. Each day of December seemed like it crawled by until that special day arrived when we could open our gifts from my parents.
The Greatest Gift
As I have gotten much older, I have come to appreciate the greatest gift. the gift of faith. This was a gift I received as a child but did not understand how wonderful it is or the price which Jesus paid for it. As each year passes. the Lord reveals how special this gift is. I believe as we grow in faith we will continue to grow in appreciation for this amazing and undeserved gift. This was the gift Jesus that spoke of to the woman at the well.
John 4:9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?” 10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” 11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” [1]
Results of God’s Gift
The gift of living water is received by faith and results in eternal life. When God decided to give us the gift of eternal life, it wasn’t something that He just thought of. Long before there was a town called Bethlehem, a garden called Eden, or a planet called Earth, a decision was made in eternity that God would send His Son, born of a woman, made under the law, to redeem those that are condemned by the law.
The gift God has given us was the most sacrificial thing He could have offered. The Father sent His Son to take our place. The physical gifts we receive here on earth don’t last. All that will be left after this life is the human soul, and that will live forever.
Life is really about knowing the God, who made you and who gave you the greatest gift you will ever receive. May you ponder the greatest gift on this Christmas day.
