God’s daily direction is available to us. Life can be like a piece of furniture that requires assembly. My first inclination when assembling furniture is to try to put it together without the directions. It’s not until things aren’t going well that I will give in and read the directions.
In many ways, life is like that. God gives daily direction if we will only listen. There was a time in my life when I was making decisions apart from God’s directions and suffered the consequences.
Noah followed Directions
The Lord gave directions for Noah to do something that had never been done before. Noah was to build a giant boat that we call an ark. Scholars think it had not rained to that point and Noah did not live near an ocean. Still, Noah followed directions.
Genesis 6: 11 Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. 12 God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. 13 So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth!
14 “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. 15 Make the boat 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high. 16 Leave an 18-inch opening below the roof all the way around the boat. Put the door on the side, and build three decks inside the boat—lower, middle, and upper.
17 “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. [1]
Noah’s obedience saved his family from the great flood the Lord sent upon the earth to destroy the wicked. As Noah built the Ark, I believe he received God’s daily direction. It took years to build the ark and there would have been many details to its construction. The Ark would have taken years to build and all of God’s directions were not given at one time.
God still gives Directions
You may not realize it, but the Lord is continually giving us direction by the Holy Spirit. Just as God most likely gave Noah daily direction, He still does that with us. God has also given us free will and we can disregard any or all of God’s direction. The Lord does not give us guidance to make our life difficult, but to make our life better. When we humbly follow God’s daily direction it benefits us and those around us.
Psalm 25:9 He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. [2]
2 Timothy 3: 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. [3]
What guidance is the Lord giving you in your life today? How would your life change if you followed what the Holy Spirit is prompting you to do or change? How would that affect the people around you? If you haven’t placed your faith in Jesus yet, is the Lord prompting you to do that today?
Psalm 24:4 Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. 5 Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you. [4]
