The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Have you ever thought about the importance of humbling ourselves? If you have, you know it is not easy to humble yourself. When we admit we are wrong and apologize it takes great courage. When we take those steps to humble ourselves it also impacts people around us. I believe this is because every person knows how difficult it is to admit their wrong in front of others.

All of us have done things we need to ask forgiveness for, but we don’t always humble ourselves and do so. When others take that step of humility it sets a good example for everyone and may give us the courage to humble ourselves.

A Sinful Woman Humbles Herself Before the Lord

Jesus was invited to a home of a Pharisee, but an immoral woman in the community heard He was eating there and came to the house. Prior to her arrival she purchased an extremely valuable and beautiful alabaster jar of perfume.

It took courage for her to come to a home of a Pharisee. Pharisees would have considered a woman like her to be worthless. I’m sure she received disapproving looks as she went into the house. But it is what she does next that gives insight into her heart.

Luke 7:38 Then she knelt behind him at his feet, weeping. Her tears fell on his feet, and she wiped them off with her hair. Then she kept kissing his feet and putting perfume on them. [1]

Place yourself in the story and be the woman. As she kneels before Jesus, I believe she is very repentant about her lifestyle. She sheds tears as she humbles herself before the Lord. In many ways when we come to the Lord, we are ashamed of what we are confessing. As we confess our sins and repent of what we did, the Lord brings healing to our soul as we are forgiven.

The Lord Calls Us to Humble Ourselves

The first step in humbling ourselves is listening and obeying the voice of the Holy Spirit. As we open our hearts to the Lord, He will prompt us when we need to humble ourselves. To humble ourselves takes courage and the Lord provides us with courage by the work of the Holy Spirit. God will give us the strength to do what He is calling us to do as we depend on Him for our strength.

Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. [2] Is the Lord calling you today to humble yourself? If so, take His hand and let Him lead and encourage you. To hear more about the importance of humbling ourselves, listen here:
