The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

It is reassuring to know that Jesus calms the storms of life as we walk along our faith journey. Throughout our lives, we will encounter storms that seem to overwhelm us. My grandparents lost a three-year-old child due to a sudden illness and were comforted by the love of God through scripture, fellow believers, and the work of the Holy Spirit.

Perhaps you are in a storm right now and are wondering when Jesus will calm the storm. The Lord reminds us He is our peace in the middle of a storm. The Lord tells us true peace is in Him. John 16:33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. [1]

Jesus Calmed the Storm the Disciples Were In

The disciples struggled as they sailed across the sea of Galilee in a storm. Jesus was asleep in the boat after a long day of teaching. Jesus was human and must have been exhausted as the storm did not wake Him. In a panic, the disciples decided to act.

Mark 4:38bThe disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.[2] What would it have been like to be a disciple and watch Jesus calm the storm? What would happen to your fear?

Jesus Gives Peace Amidst the Storm

Sometimes the storm may rage all around us, and yet Jesus gives us an unexplainable peace that only God can provide. It is supernatural. Before my father died, God gave him great peace because of his faith in Jesus. There are times when the storm ceases, as the disciples experienced. The Lord holds our hand as we walk through the storm at other times. Scripture gives insight into the Lord holding our hand and the peace it brings. Isaiah 41:13For I hold you by your right hand— I, the Lord your God. And I say to you, ‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you. [3]

Sometimes We Need Jesus with Skin On

While our Lord is always with us, there are times when we need fellow humans. God will often work through fellow believers to pray over and encourage us in the storms.

Something special happens when we gather around someone who is hurting and pray over them. Perhaps the Lord is placing someone that is hurting on your heart. Don’t be afraid to bring other believers to gather around this person and pray for them. The Lord wants to work through you to be Jesus with skin on. James 5:13The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.[4]
