The blessing of serving others is one of the greatest gifts we can receive. For several years I was a volunteer tutor at a local grade school. After the first year, I concluded this was one of the greatest gifts the Lord ever gave me. This was unexpected.
Perhaps you have experienced the blessing of serving others. Is the Lord calling you to serve somewhere? 1 Peter 4:10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.[1]
Jesus Called the Disciples to Serve Others
James and John came to Jesus to request to have seats on His right and left when He came into His Kingdom. Jesus kindly redirected them and showed that true greatness is serving others. Mark 10:43 But among you, it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44, and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave of everyone else. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” [2] The words Jesus expressed are just as applicable to us as to the disciples. True greatness in God’s Kingdom is different from greatness in the world. True greatness consists of humbling ourselves and taking on the role of a servant.
Experiencing Fulfillment in Serving Others
Would you like greater fulfillment in your life? Amazing things happen when we humble ourselves and serve where our Lord guides us. The world tells us to seek satisfaction in power and riches. As we travel down this road, our sinful nature wants more. But, we discover these things don’t fulfill us. They are a poor imitation of true fulfillment. The Lord tells us to humble ourselves and serve others to find true fulfillment. The Lord calls us to become modest, meek, and humble.
When we become the Lord’s servant, we plan to strive to fulfill our Father’s will, not ours. This is not an easy journey, but with God’s help, we can move away from our plan to His. Jesus paid for sins on the cross. He has pardoned and forgiven us. He now calls us to be His servants as part of the fantastic plan for our lives.
We serve Jesus as we serve others along our journey. Sometimes I’m not sure where to help. Perhaps you struggle in the same way. Pray and ask the Lord for guidance. As the Lord guides you, step out in faith and serve where the Lord has planted you. Matthew 5:16In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. [3]
