The ministry of angels is all around us, although we may never be aware of it. Scripture gives us insight into the ministry of angels. Three men appeared to Abraham, two of whom were angels who would destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Jacob slept and dreamed of angels ascending and descending upon a ladder. Hebrews 1:14 Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.
In the New Testament, an angel visited Mary to inform her she would give birth to a child by the Holy Spirit. The Shepherds encountered angels when Jesus was born. Luke 2:15 When the angels had returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go to Bethlehem! Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
Angels Minister to the Women at the Tomb of Jesus
Faithful women went to anoint Jesus’ body with burial spices but encountered angels who told them Jesus had risen. Mark 16:5 When they (the women) entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, 6 but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body.
Can you imagine the angel’s impact on the women who were mourning the death of Jesus? What would the women have thought when they found out He had risen? God gave the task of announcing Jesus’ resurrection to a servant angel. The women were honored to be the first to hear this special message.
God’s Angels are at Work When We Don’t Realize It
One of my friends was working on a semi-truck when a jack failed, and he was severely injured as the truck fell on him. Suddenly, he was in severe pain as several tons of steel pinned him to the concrete. Not long after that, his spirit left his body, and he observed his body lying motionless under the truck. While his spirit was outside of his body, he watched two angels kneeling over his body. One angel was on one side and one on the other. Then, a few minutes later, a medic began to work on him, and his spirit returned to his body. At this point, he could no longer see the angels. Even though he could no longer see the angels, that did not mean they had left.
God’s Angels are Around You
Think how important you are to God for Him to place angels in your life! They are always at work around God’s children caring for those who will inherit salvation. 1 John 3:1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!
