Faith gives us peace. That’s the beautiful thing about having a relationship with Jesus, our Savior. Life has many twists and turns. When life is difficult, the Lord can give me a sense of peace no matter what is going on in my life. You may have experienced this sense of peace at a difficult time.
During the last part of my father’s life, he had a great sense of peace, although he was seriously ill. From a world’s perspective, it is hard for people to understand how someone near passing into eternity could have such peace.
Paul writes about this supernatural peace. Philippians 4:6Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then, you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.[1] As we thank the Lord, we look to Him and not our circumstances; as we do, the Lord gives us supernatural peace.
The Lord Gives Peace to Those Who Please Him
On the day Jesus was born, an angel of the Lord made an announcement to the shepherds outside Bethlehem. The army of angels followed to praise God. Luke 2:13 Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” [2]
Who are the people who please the Lord that receive peace? Hebrews 11: 6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.[3] Those who please the Lord have a relationship with Jesus as their Savior. The peace the angel speaks of can only be brought by the Messiah.
The Source of Our Peace
John 14:27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.[4] In this verse, our Lord Jesus promises us peace that only He can give. The world may offer riches and power, but only Jesus can provide true peace.
There are people all over the world who desire peace but are looking in all the wrong places. When drugs or alcohol wear off, our problems still exist. Jesus gives us peace as we have a relationship with Him and surrender our difficulties to Him at the foot of the cross. Today, if you are struggling, take your problems to the cross of Jesus, surrender to Him, and let His peace fill you from top to bottom.
