What is the purpose of miraculous signs? They help people to grow in faith and have greater trust in the Lord. Several years ago, we did a crusade in Central America, which thousands of people attended. Just before our speaker was to give the message of salvation, it began to downpour, and people began to leave. Then our speaker led the people in prayer for the rain to stop. A warm wind swept through the stadium as the prayer ended, and the rain stopped like a film producer called “cut” on a movie set. Many people placed their faith in Jesus after witnessing this unique sign from the Lord.
God Showed the Israelites Many Signs
The Israelites had been in Egypt for over 400 years, predominantly as slaves, but God heard their pleas. He was aware of their situation. With God’s power demonstrated through signs and wonders, Moses led the people out of Egypt. The Pharoah finally let them go but later changed his mind and pursued them.
With the Pharoah’s army trapping them, the Lord opened the Red Sea for the Israelites to cross over on the dry ground. Thinking they were invincible, Pharoah’s army pursued the Israelites and followed them through the parted Red Sea. With the Israelites safe on the other side, the Lord closed in the waters of the Red Sea, drowning the Egyptians and saving the Israelites.
The Israelites Failed to Step out in Faith
The Lord instructed Moses to send spies into the promised land before the people. Even though they had experienced God’s miracles, ten of the twelve spies returned with a negative report. They did not think they could not conquer the people in the land. The people forgot that God would help them conquer land and looked only to themselves and grumbled against the Lord.
Numbers 14: 20 Then the Lord said, “I will pardon them as you have requested. 21 But as surely as I live, and as surely as the earth is filled with the Lord’s glory, 22 not one of these people will ever enter that land. They have all seen my glorious presence and the miraculous signs I performed both in Egypt and in the wilderness, but again and again, they have tested me by refusing to listen to my voice.[1]
The Miracles of Jesus
Jesus did many miracles we can read about in the Gospels, all pointing to Him as our Messiah. He came to rescue us from our sins by giving His life for us on the cross. There were many people that Jesus healed, but they would later die a physical death. The greatest miracle Jesus did was not healing but leading people to place their faith in Him. If you have placed your faith in Jesus, you have experienced the greatest miracle of your life.
