Praying for God’s will is a massive step of faith as we realize God has a plan for our lives. Psalm 32: 8 The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. [1] As you meditate on this verse, the Lord will reveal that He has a plan and will guide you along that path for your life. God gives us advice so we know which way to go. We need to fulfill His plans and purpose for our lives.
We must be honest and surrender to God as we pray for His will. It is hard to accomplish God’s will when we don’t ask or when we don’t follow His guidance. Are you willing to align your life as you pray for God’s will?
Jesus Prayed to Follow the Father’s Will
As we read the Bible, we sometimes forget that Jesus was true God and true man. The author of Hebrews tells us that Jesus faced all the tests we do because he was God and man. Jesus needed to pray to follow His Father’s will and strength just like we do. Hebrews 4:15 This High Priest of ours (Jesus) understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.[2]
At the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus began to cry out in prayer to His Father. Mark 14:36 “Abba, Father,” he cried out, “everything is possible for you. Please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” [3] The depth of Jesus’ prayer tells us He was not just going through the motions but was in a real battle. When Jesus chose to follow God’s will, He would willingly give up His life on the cross to save us from our sins.
Knowing God’s Will
As we spend time in God’s word and develop a relationship with Him, the Lord shows us what He made us to be. As believers, we no longer belong to ourselves but are to live for the Lord and His plan and purpose. 2 Corinthians 5:15 “He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for them.” [4]
When we surrender to the Lord, our everyday choices reflect His plan and purpose. We soon find ourselves leading a much different life as we submit one day at a time which grows into weeks, months, and years. In addition, as the Lord guides us, we are obedient to follow Him, even when we don’t fully comprehend His plan.
