The sword of the Spirit is the sixth piece of armor that the Apostle Paul discusses in Ephesians chapter six. Paul describes the sword of the Spirit as God’s word. When a Roman soldier was involved in combat, His sword was an offensive weapon against His enemy. The sword was so effective that it could easily cut through the enemy’s defenses in a personal battle. In this respect, the sword was a weapon of great power.
Similarly, God’s word also has great power to pierce enemy lies. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and Spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.[1]We can quickly tell the difference between right and wrong as we take the Lord’s word into our hearts. God’s word is the ultimate standard, and we can be confident this is an excellent weapon we can use in this cosmic battle.
God’s Word Pushes Back the Enemy
The enemy can easily mislead us if we are unfamiliar with God’s word. In today’s church, too many believers don’t know God’s word and can be easily led astray. However, those who spend time with God’s word and take it into their hearts are blessed. John 5:24I (Jesus) tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life.” [2]
On the day of Pentecost, Peter proclaimed the good news of Jesus, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, the sword of the Spirit cut into people’s hearts. Acts 2:37and they said to Peter and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” 38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.[3]The word brought their sin to the surface because God’s word is powerful and leads to personal transformation. That day the pit of hell lost its grip on 3000 people.
Take up the Sword in the Lord’s Strength
As a believer, it is not always easy to take up our swords and fight against the enemies of faith. Remember that God doesn’t call us to battle on our own but with His strength. When we are in the battles of life and the trials that occur, we can find peace in knowing the Lord is on our side. Romans 8:31 If God is for us, who can ever be against us?[4]I encourage you today to take up the sword of God’s word daily. God’s word reminds us that His word is the ultimate truth, and we can stand on and believe His promises.
