The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Paul demonstrated joy amid suffering in the letter to the Philippians. When Paul wrote this letter, he was in prison. Paul began his letter with a prayer of thanksgiving for the Philippians. Then, he mentions a reason for his thankfulness. Philippians 1: 7b You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News.[1]

Most scholars assume that Paul was under house arrest in Rome. Paul was probably chained to a Roman guard as part of his imprisonment. Even under these circumstances, Paul could see God working. Philippians 1: 12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters, that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. 13 For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ. 14 And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.[2]

Rejoicing During Uncertainty

When Paul wrote the letter to the Philippians, it didn’t appear that he knew the outcome of the charges. He could be released, or he could receive a death sentence. Yet, in these dire circumstances, Paul speaks of joy.

Philippians 2: 17 But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. 18 Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy…23 I hope to send him (Timothy) to you just as soon as I find out what is going to happen to me here. 24 And I have confidence from the Lord that I myself will come to see you soon…3:1 Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord. I never get tired of telling you these things, and I do it to safeguard your faith.[3]

The Source of Joy

From the verses above, we can see that the church at Philippi gave Paul joy because they cared for him. He also was joyful that God continued to work through him even in prison. His joy did not depend on a happy situation.

Happiness is the result of favorable circumstances and is temporary. True joy is a gift of God as we trust Him. We can experience joy during trouble because it is not based on circumstances. This sounds counter-intuitive and contradictory, but we see it happening with Paul.

It can also happen to us. As we know and trust God, we can be assured of fruitful work here on earth. But, as believers, we have hope for eternity with God. This is how we can have joy amid suffering. To learn more, listen here:
