As believers in Christ, we have dual citizenship. We live here on earth, but we are also citizens of heaven. Colossians 3: 1Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.[1]
Heavenly Citizenship
We know God keeps His promises, and so, as believers, we have the promise of eternity with Jesus. This helps set our priorities. We focus on what matters in the long term and not what is temporary. Paul tells us we have a new, restored life because Christ died and rose again. Therefore, we should leave the old sinful life behind and live the new life Jesus has given us. Our relationship with God is forever, so it should be a priority. Our part in building this relationship is to be available to pray and read the Word. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God will enable us to understand the Word and what He desires of us.
Our human relationships can also last forever. Believers will be reunited in heaven. Therefore, we want to tell others the Good News of Jesus because it will impact their lives forever.
Earthly Citizenship
D.L. Moody used to say that we don’t want to be so heavenly-minded that we are no earthly good. Even though this earthly life is temporary, God has a purpose for us. Each day we need to look to Him for direction. But there are also some practical things we can do:
- We can use money to do God’s will, not accumulate it for our pleasure.
- Choosing a spouse who shares our faith and wants to please Jesus is important.
- Avoid focusing on gaining many material goods.
- Find a Holy Spirit-filled, Bible-based church and become an active member.
- Do the best work we can using the gifts that God has given us.
