As we look at the letter of Second Timothy, we can see that Paul is passing the torch of leadership. The letter’s greeting gives us insight. 2 Timothy 1:1 This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus. I have been sent out to tell others about the life he has promised through faith in Christ Jesus. 2 I am writing to Timothy, my dear son. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.[1]
Paul calls Timothy “my dear son.” Most likely, Paul, on his first missionary trip, taught Timothy about Jesus. When Paul returned to Timothy’s hometown of Lystra on his second missionary trip, he asked Timothy to join his ministry team. From then on, Timothy was either working with Paul or sent on assignments by Paul. At the time of the writing of this letter, Timothy was on assignment in Ephesus.
A Dynamic Duo
We know that Paul was bold for the faith, and Timothy was probably more sensitive and withdrawn. “It was their very differences that made them such a dynamic duo. Timothy’s support and attention to detail would become indispensable to the full use of Paul’s great gifts. And Paul’s impetuous daring and expansive vision would become Timothy’s lifeblood. But now, Timothy is on his own, having to be and do so many things that he would not have chosen.”[2]
This was Paul’s final letter, probably written a few months before his beheading by Nero. Paul was in prison and knew the outlook was poor. 2 Timothy 4: 6 As for me, my life has already been poured out as an offering to God. The time of my death is near. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. [3]
Paul encouraged Timothy as he would become a leader on his own. Timothy must do things out of his comfort zone because Paul is gone. This letter also encourages us today as God calls us to depend on Him and leave our comfort zones to serve.
Mentored to Move On
Paul had taught Timothy well and encouraged Him to continue building God’s Kingdom. 2 Timothy 4:1I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom: 2 Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favorable or not. Patiently correct, rebuke, and encourage your people with good teaching… 5 But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. Don’t be afraid of suffering for the Lord. Work at telling others the Good News, and fully carry out the ministry God has given you.[4]
Paul had given Timothy the tools for leadership and, with God’s help, urged him to use them. Who mentored you in the faith? How can you do the same for another? Paul and Timothy act as a model for living and training those who will follow us.
