The writer of Hebrews shows us that there is no reincarnation. Hebrews 9: 27 And just as each person is destined to die once and after that comes judgment. 28 So also Christ was offered once for all time as a sacrifice to take away the sins of many people. He will come again, not to deal with our sins, but to bring salvation to all who are eagerly waiting for him.[1] The Scripture states explicitly that a person is destined to die only once, not many times.
What is Reincarnation?
“Reincarnation is the ancient belief that after death, a person continues to undergo a series of deaths and rebirths into a new body until ultimately reaching a state of purification from sin. At this stage, the cycle of reincarnation ceases as the human soul obtains oneness with the spiritual “Absolute,” and thereby experiences eternal peace. Reincarnation is taught in many pagan religions with origins in India, particularly Hinduism and Buddhism.”[2]
Even pagan religions see that humankind has a sin problem. Thus, the reincarnation theory would give us multiple lives to get it right; to be good enough to work our way to perfection. Throughout the ages, humans have tried many theories to counteract sin. We’ve tried legalism and rituals, sacrifices, good works, ancestral worship, and separation from the physical world, but all these failed to solve our separation from God.
Jesus is the Answer to the Sin Problem
It would take a perfect person who never sinned to be able to step in our place. This is the person who could pay the price we could not pay for us to have a restored relationship with God. Hebrews 9:14 Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins. 15 That is why he is the one who mediates a new covenant between God and people, so that all who are called can receive the eternal inheritance God has promised them. For Christ died to set them free from the penalty of the sins they had committed under that first covenant.[3]
Reincarnation is incompatible with Scripture because it denies judgment and hell. 2 Corinthians 5:10 For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body.[4]
Jesus promises us eternal life with Him after we die if we receive the gift of salvation He won on the cross. John 3: 16 For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.[5] John 14:1 Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you] 3 When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am.[6]
