The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

When you are young, you may not think much about the inheritance of heaven that awaits you as a person of faith until someone close to you passes into eternity. When I was seven years old, my grandmother died, which was the first time I began to think about heaven. In my child’s mind, I thought, “If something happens to me, Grandma and Jesus will be there to take my hand.”

As you meditate on God’s word, you begin to receive a glimpse of the beautiful world the Lord has in store for His children. When we are born again, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside, changing our life in the present and enabling us to go to heaven when we die. We no longer need to fear death when we become children of God. The disciple Peter tells us what a priceless treasure our heavenly inheritance is.

1 Peter 1:All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. [1]

In His Mercy, We are Born Again

To be born again is to become a person of faith. Our rebirth is not a physical one but a spiritual one. This rebirth changes us as the Holy Spirit comes to live inside us. A friend’s grandmother was close to one hundred years old before she was born again. In the Lord’s mercy, she lived a long life, and near the end of her life, she surrendered to Jesus.

When the Lord calls us to faith, we experience His grace, which is His undeserved love. Although we can live a long life on this earth, it is only a drop of water in the ocean compared to eternity. At Jesus’ resurrection, He became our bridge because we can only enter heaven through Him. Jesus calls Himself the way, for He is the only way to receive salvation.

A Priceless Inheritance

Something priceless conveys the thought of extreme value, which is how Peter refers to heaven. Inheritance is given to you at no cost by someone else. Our inheritance of heaven is only possible because Jesus died for our sins on the cross and called us to faith. Although our entry into heaven is free, it costs our Savior His life. As children of the King of Kings, we will share His inheritance in glory.

Romans 8:17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ, we are heirs of God’s glory.[2] Unlike any inheritance we experience on earth, our inheritance in heaven will never decay or fade. Our inheritance will never grow old or be stained but will always remain perfect in every way. Peter calls our inheritance our salvation. Meditating on what God has for us as His children is wonderful.
