The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Each of us must account for how we were faithful with God’s gifts. In the parable of the talents, the master gave each person gifts in proportion to their abilities and then left on his trip. One servant received five bags of silver, another two, and the final servant received one. The servants did not receive more or less than they could handle. If a servant failed in his assignment, they would not be overwhelmed because the master knew well what each person was capable of.

The Lord gives each person time, talent, and treasure according to their ability and expects each to use them wisely until He returns. What will we do with what God has given us? Will we use it for ourselves, or will we use it according to God’s plan for our life?

How Will I Use My Gifts?

As a young adult, I had many talents. As time passed, the Lord revealed that I was using my gifts for myself. In simple terms, I was being selfish. Through the work of the Holy Spirit and Scripture, God redirected me. I changed my profession and began using my gifts for the Kingdom, not myself. I believe it often takes the Lord’s intervention in our lives to point out things that need to change.

When the Lord brings correction in our lives, it is for our good because He wants us to mature in the faith. In the parable of the three servants, the servant given five bags of silver makes five more, and the one given two earns two more. Matthew 25:23 The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ [1]

The final servant who received one bag of silver buried it in the ground, which meant he did nothing with the talent the Lord had given him. The master called this servant wicked and lazy because he was unfaithful with the gift.

It is Not too Late to Change

What is the Lord telling you as you read this? As we listen to the Lord, He often guides us on the next steps He wants us to take. The Lord desires us to have an open heart to what He is telling us so we can make changes that will transform us. As a loving Shepherd, the Lord is always guiding us.

Sometimes, we need to humble ourselves and admit our sins. When we soften our hearts, the Lord can easily redirect us, enabling us to be productive in His Kingdom. A good student listens to their tutor so they can improve, and as children of God, we need to have an open heart to the work of the Holy Spirit. There is nothing the Lord desires more for us than to live fruitful lives. This is also when we feel the most fulfilled in life.
