The Light of Christ Journey

Encouraging people on their journey with Christ

Imagine you were seeking Jesus to hear the Word as He taught along the sea of Galilee. Luke 5:1 One day, as Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, great crowds pressed in on him to listen to the Word of God.[1] As Jesus proclaimed God’s Word, the Bible does not say how it affected those listening.

Scripture gives us insight into the power of God’s Word. Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.[2] Something supernatural happens when we allow the Word of the Lord into our hearts. When God’s Word sinks into our hearts, transformation occurs, and people begin to change from the inside out. God’s Word will transform some; others may hear the Word but resist the work of the Holy Spirit.

Seeking Jesus Takes Effort

Matthew 6:33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. [3] Only good things happen when we seek out the Lord to hear His Word. There may have been times when the Lord drew you to His Word. The Lord draws us to His Word for many different reasons. He draws some to place their faith in Him, while others may need reassurance, guidance, or conviction of sin.

As Jesus taught the people along the Sea of Galilee, He would have listened to the voice of the Holy Spirit who guided His teaching. The more time I spend with the Lord and His Word, the more I am amazed at the timing of the passages He leads me to. Several times, when I struggled with something, it seemed to be covered in my morning devotion. It is always reassuring when God’s Word is just what you need for that day. This shows us how the Lord’s hand is on us.

God’s Word Transforms Us

The Word of God transformed the people as they listened to Jesus preach at the Sea of Galilee. John the Baptist had gone before Jesus to prepare people’s hearts with the baptism of repentance. Jesus’ ministry was about leading people to faith or a deeper faith. The people were eager to hear God’s Word as they pressed in around Jesus, which says something about their hearts.

Is the Lord calling you today to press into God’s Word? Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.[4]
