As the angel told Joseph in a dream, Jesus would save us from our sin. We need to look at the context of this revelation to understand how important these words are. Joseph was engaged to Mary, but he discovered she was pregnant. With a heavy heart, Joseph decided to break his engagement quietly to not disgrace the woman he loved.
Mary was pregnant, but it was supernaturally by the Holy Spirit, which Joseph did not realize. Joseph was a righteous man and the person the Lord selected as the adopted father of the Son of God, the Messiah. Matthew 1:20 As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”[1]
Revelation From God Can Change Everything
Has there been a time in your life when you struggled with what to do? Sometimes, circumstances overwhelm us, and we desperately need the Lord’s discernment. We may not know what to do, but as we seek the Lord, He will guide us. Jesus gives us this promise. Matthew 6:33Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” [2]
Something about persistence in our prayers makes a difference; maybe the Lord is telling you today not to give up. Insights from the Lord can take us in a different direction or give us the understanding we would not have otherwise. When the angel spoke to Joseph in a dream about Mary, he would receive insight into her pregnancy and the importance of her child.
Jesus Brings Salvation
Joseph would have been familiar with the coming of the Messiah but did not realize the role he would play. Jesus’ name means “The Lord saves.” This unborn baby would grow up and bring God’s promise of salvation. Jesus broke into time and space and was born into this world to save us because we can’t save ourselves from sin and its results. No matter how good we are, our lives are plagued by sin. Only Jesus, being true man and true God, could pay the penalty for our sins when He died on the cross.
When Jesus died on the cross, He took all of our sins on him. Isaiah the prophet wrote about the Messiah 700 years before He was born. Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. [3]
Today, if you are struggling, you can turn to Jesus, come to the cross, and find forgiveness for your sins. This is the Good News of Jesus. Perhaps the Lord is calling you today to come to the cross and become a child of God. For others, He may be calling you to rededicate your life to Him.
